Slot
Canyons 1
Some
slot canyons develop with more than one narrow section. Antelope or
Corkscrew canyon has gained note for both Upper and Lower canyons which
remain among the most accessible and beautiful slot canyons. These
remarkable, narrows developed along a natural seam in the Navajo Sandstone
to drain an immense slick-rock area and funnel runoff through the confined
depths. The resulting labyrinth of overlying wings and undulating
canyon walls create ribbon-like passages and surreal cathedral high rooms of
filtered and glowing light.
Antelope Canyon flows into the deep of Glen
Canyon which now holds Lake Powell. Originally, Glen Canyon became
known as a particularly beautiful gorge cut by the powerful Colorado River.
This great river has served to carry the silt cut by all the tributaries
within the drainage of much of the western slope of the Rocky Mountains and
slick-rock dominated Colorado Plateau.
